How to make a printer shareable

Overview

This article will cover how to set a printer to be shared by a network. This is used for having multiple computers print from one printer.

Information

  1. Use the keyboard shortcut Windows+R and type in control printers to open Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click on the appropriate printer icon, and choose Printer Properties.
  3. Click on the tab named Sharing
  4. Select Share this printer

Shared Printer Setup for ExpressPass and Admin Stations (2:1)

Follow these steps to share 1 printer between 2 laptops:

1. Connect both laptops to the same network
2. Connect the printer via USB cable to one of the two laptops, this will be the primary laptop.
3. Configure all settings for the printer as normal.
4. In printer properties, you will need to setup the printer to be shared. This needs to be done on both laptops.

a. Open Printer Properties
b. Click the Sharing Tab
c. Make sure Share this printer and Render print jobs on client computers are checked.
d. Change the share name to EPSON
e. Click Apply, then OK

f. Turn on network sharing: On the sharing tab of printer properties, click network and sharing center:

g. In the left menu, click on ‘Change advanced sharing settings’
h. Expand all three headers and match settings to below screen shots:

5. Determine the Computer Name for the primary laptop.
a. For Expo Logic owned computers, the computer name will be ELI####. This can be found in the top right corner of the desktop. (Disregard any
special characters.)
b. For client owned computers; search for ‘This PC’ in the windows search. Click on properties. Computer Name will be displayed at the top of the
About window.

6. On the laptop that is not connect to the printer (secondary laptop) hold the windows + R button to open the ‘Run’ window. In the Open field, type
Control Printers to launch the Devices and Printers window. In the top bar, click ‘Add Printer’:

7. Skip the auto search tool: Click ‘The printer I want isn’t listed’ to advance to the next screen.
8. Use the ‘Select a shared printer by name ‘ option and follow the format of the first prompt using the computer name from the Primary laptop. Then click
browse to find the computer.
9. Click on the computer then choose the printer from the list and follow on-screen prompts.
10. Select set as default and print a test page to confirm connection.
11. Go to printer preferences on the secondary laptop to set stock settings.
12. Print test to confirm.
